Early Identification of Autism in Infants/Toddlers and Intervention Approaches
Tresentation by: Sally J. Rogers, Ph.D., Professor of Psychiatry, Department of Psychiatry,School of Medicine, University of California-Davis, M.I.N.D. Institute

April 7 , 2006 - San Jose, California

Description:
This session will review challenges to early diagnosis/identification of autism in infants and toddlers, including
descriptions of symptoms based on older children, lack of valid tools for infant diagnosis/identification, and lack of
discriminative power of some early symptoms. Then we will review the evidence of specific differences in infants who will
develop autism and the most recent findings from prospective studies of infant siblings, some of whom develop autism and
some of whom develop other delays. We will end with a discussion about intervention implications for infants.

Objectives:

  • Participants will be able to list four developmental characteristics that distinguish two year olds with autism from
    those with other delays.
  • Participants will be able to name three behaviors in the first year of life that have been found to distinguish infants
who will later develop autism from typically developing infants and from infants with other delays.
  • Participants will be aware of some classic symptoms of autism that may be unclear or hard to detect in toddlers with
    autism.
  • Participants will know what must be considered when using current diagnostic or screening instruments for autism
    with children under age 2.
  • Participants will be able to state what developmental risks are associated with being a sibling of a child with autism.

Schedule: Registration opens at 8:00 a.m. Session begins at 9:00 a.m. Session ends at 12:00 noon.
